I hear that many from the Missouri Synod, having seen with disdain some of the decisions coming from the august sessions of ELCA leadership, are coming to the conclusion that that body may have decided to enforce the Edict of Worms after all!

There is a great deal of rot in the ELCA that is certain. I have no desire to defend its leadership in the slightest and they are a frequent embarrassment to me. So where is it that they have gone wrong?
Piety. They have forsaken the gospel to pursue their piety. We often miss this because it is liberal and therefore elevates very different values, but that's what it is. And so inclusion, political activism and various other ways to be "righteous" dominate what the church leadership thinks about and does.
Lost, somewhere, is the idea of sin and the need of the sinner for forgiveness. They're too busy preening and pursuing their projects to be bothered with such antiquated ideas.
Sigh--I go for a cheap shot and once again, I get thoughtfulness. :^) Well done, Ben!
Seriously, it is telling--and a memory of a former conversation I had with you--to see how often we miss God's version of faithfulness and try to set up our own instead.
Double sigh.
Yes, we miss. Sometimes on purpose, sometimes by accident. Sometimes because of weakness, sometimes from rebellion. It is good in such times to remember Jacob. Jacob was a first class schmuck. As was his wife and mother, and most of his sons. And yet God took him and blessed him beyond all measure. So let's try not to miss and likewise try not to get too hung up on it. On the other hand, let us continually make a big deal about how faithful God is and how he can make something out of nothing.
