Here's a howler

In comments about this article by Liz Sidoti of the AP, James Taranto of the Wall Street Journal lays this one out:

How far does America still have to go to bridge its centuries-old racial divide? Liz Sidoti answers the question:

Even in 2009, a black man cannot become president of the United States without some knuckleheads sending stupid emails about him.

To be sure, America has made some racial progress. But the dream of equality will not be truly and fully realized until President Obama's political detractors treat him with the same respect George W. Bush's detractors showed him.

With the same "respect" Bush's detractors showed him? You mean calling him "Chimpy McHalliburton" and "Bushitler", and that sort of thing?

Personally, I have the hope that, as much as I despise Obama's politics, Obama's detractors will treat him with a LOT more respect than Daily Kos and Huffington Post treated President Bush.

You know Taranto was being sarcastic, right? He's riffing on the very idea that criticism of the President is in any way a barometer of racial issues, and pointing up the absurdity of using the relatively limited criticism of Obama (as opposed to what Bush consistently received) as a measure of anything, particularly in light of the immense historical progress on race that he lays out.

Taranto was being sarcastic, but Liz Sidoti wasn't.

Right, but it was Taranto who made the comment about treating Obama with as much respect as Bush was treated, that Bert seemed to be reacting to. If you know Taranto, there's no possibility that it was anything other than sarcasm, richly deserved by Liz Sidoti's drivel.

What about buckfush?

That too, Gabrielle--but can we abstain from listing ALL of the cheap shots taken against our previous President? This is a family blog, after all. :^)

I hope y'all are right about him being sarcastic; it doesn't come across super clearly in the column, though.

To those familiar with Taranto, it's beyond question. Not only is he facetious or sarcastic most of the time, liberal hypocrisy on stuff like this is one of his major themes.

I thought that since the b and the f were switched around, it would be ok to use that pseudo expletive.

Oh, it was fine. I was just trying to make sure other attacks didn't come through. :^)
