Going Postal and Prozac

I did some searching around, and it appears that both the Omaha shooter, as well as the shooter in Arvada/Colorado Springs, had been on fairly heavy regimes of antidepressants and other psychotropic drugs. Now I don't know whether it's the drugs causing the violence, or whether the people taking the drugs were simply a lot more predisposed to antisocial and psychotic behavior to begin with. However, I dare suggest that those involved--specifically the FDA and drug manufacturers like Eli Lilly--owe the world a serious, critical look at the data to determine what's really going on here.

Put gently, it is an anomaly when someone not on psychiatric drugs goes on a rampage, just as it is an anomaly when they choose victims that are not in a gun-free zone. Something's going on.

I'm sure this is being looked at somewhere out there, but I share your desire to find out what the answers are.

It's more than plausible that since people are being put on psychotropics almost literally at the drop of a hat anymore, it'd be hard to find someone acting extremely anti-social who was not on such drugs, without the drugs being causative. But I would really like to know the actual facts of the case, not just the plausibilities.

Well said, and good luck. I just did a little Google search, and...well...let's just say that there are an awful lot of "creative" people out there generating statistics that simply cannot mesh with each other, let alone reality. We need a Hercules to divert the river into the stables, to draw a picture.

Or maybe we simply need to demonstrate that there are more effective therapies. I certainly know that a decade of intensive use of antipsychotic/antidepressant drugs hasn't helped my brother-in-law, and I do a far better job of predicting his manic stages than do his counselors. (he buys & sells cars when he gets going....if you see a bill of sale, watch out)
