New Years' Resolutions

To all of my eager readers....well, really, any reader that I can get. :^) Here are my resolutions for this coming year.

1. To get back in mediocre shape and lose 20-30 lbs. I'm doing some calisthenics (squats, pushups) to get my flabby muscles moving to burn a bit more fat.

2. To work more on what is important and eliminate some of the trivia from my life. Even that which is morally neutral can be a horrendous distraction.

Yours? Keep me accountable if you like.

Bert,

I think it it great that your resolving to accomplish some worth while goals. I don't make New Years Resolutions per se. But I believe physical health is very important, as is trying to eliminate idleness (triva) from your life. I scraped TV years ago. It is an enormous waste of time. (And not very physically challenging either. =)

Bert,

Sounds like a great plan. You might miss the extra pounds during the winter months (assuming they provide better insulation), but in the long run I think you'll be better off. If nothing else, you'll get more miles from your bike tires.

My resolutions?

Since moving to the freezing great white North, I seem to have accumulated a few extra pounds (of fat) as well, although I've actually lost weight. I feel like a tired slob if I don't eat right/exercise, so I plan to eat better and exercise more in the coming year+ (not just the first 3 weeks).

In addition to taking better care of myself (however temporal), the Lord is also teaching me to spend more time on what is important/eternal and less time on what is temporal.

I also plan to read more of God's Word and less of uninspired works. Of course, if I had your intellectual capacity, I'd be able to read/retain a lot more :o) Even so, come quickly Lord Jesus..

I have been in the business of safety for many years now...and one thing that I have learned about losing weight that is very easy, and takes little effort while being effective is:

Drinking more than plenty of water...This not only aids in the body's digestive process, but also takes up space in the stomach, giving the stomach the impression that it is more full than it really is. Soda and coffee are diuretics (which remove water from the body) and should be limited. (the coffee one is personally my problem).

The second easy device, is simple stretching first thing in the morning. Exercises really shouldn't be done before proper warm up of the body. Muscles tend to constrict during sleep and warm up stretches work wonders for that. (notice how good it feels?) On the same note, the warm up stretches (I'm not talking yoga- just simple stretches that address the major muscle groups) increase the body's metabolism and get the heart rate going as well. The morning time is usually the best to get your metabolism motor running, so a run or a bike ride (swimming is good also) after stretches yet before breakfast would be nominal.

I agree with David, I don't do resolutions. (or running either, even if an alligator is chasing me...)

But the best to you Bert. God Bless!
