How to win it?

The Russian army apparently is only moving "from gloaming to gloaming", and that suggests that one way to really take the war to them would be to provide night vision goggles/scopes to select Ukrainian units....perhaps along with some true sniper rifles chambered, say, in 6.5mm Creedmoor to "share the love" at over twice the effective range of a Kalishnikov.

Or perhaps if we could get someone into Moscow with that outfit.....Putin delenda est.

It has been noted that the Russians are frequently supplied with nearly 100yo guns. Good enough for grandpa, good enough for you? Not that the Mosin Nagant is a BAD gun, but against modern weaponry with modern optics, it's not your best bet.

One assumes the Ukrainians are using guns built after Vietnam. ?

I don't know about the 100yo claim--the best I'd heard is that their up to 70 year old AK-47s were being replaced by a newer variant--and the best I know about the Ukrainian arsenal is that it's probably older than the Russian. It is, however, backed by men who believe in what they're doing and are playing for keeps.

Age isn't that big of a deal, because some guns just age well, like the Browning M2 .50 cal and the (also designed by Browning) 1911 pistol. Just for kicks, I asked a couple men in my church who'd served what they'd carry if they were there, and the answers were the M16 and the AK-47. M16 because the ammo is lighter and it has longer range, AK because you can get ammo from just about anywhere.

I think it was the optics that were more of a factor, and the single-bullet situation with an M-N. Great guns... last forever. Good for sniping - if you can see properly.

I'm quoting DH of course :D He's been watching footage and recognized some of the guns.
