Points of reference

With reference to the modern #MeToo movement, here's an interesting article (and horrifying, BTW) that documents part of the English movement to end prostitution.  Evidently part of the problem was that numerous members of Parliament thought that visiting brothels--often government-controlled at the time--was a normal part of growing up.  It illustrates the fact as well--relevant then as now--that the real dividing line between "jailbait" and someone one could legally (if not morally) pursue is not really physical maturity, but rather whether society has decided that a person is "off limits" or not--and that "off limits" designation really has more to do with emotional and mental maturity than anything else, along with a perceived balance of power in the relationship.

Here's another interesting thing; resorts are putting spray sunscreen booths by beaches.  Apparently the old pattern of wearing swimwear where you'd either be able to apply sunscreen yourself, or where you had companions you'd trust putting sunscreen on your back, is fading, and people are deciding to go to these resorts without having trusted friends nearby.  Raises all kinds of questions for me, really.

I work with an anti-trafficking group. Have met prostitutes, current and former.

Honestly - I cannot for the life of me figure out why any man except on the shores of desperation would be able to function with most of them.

Seriously. The "pay up" tattoo on her arm - doesn't that kind of break the mood? Knowing she's almost certainly under age? That she's taking drugs or being threatened - probably both - to be able to do what she's doing?

You can get a woman for free in a bar if that's what you want.

I just don't understand.

I think it's about men compartmentalizing their lives, really. They don't think about the brutality, the law, drugs, or STDs. To see someone as off limits, you need to see them as human, not just a breathing receptacle for semen.

Do you think a public awareness campaign detailing the violence and the lifespan would help curb the problem? Real question.

this is true for 10% of men. Just like 10% of women get all the overt attention.

as a working bondsman, I've met more than one (they prefer the term 'escort' and describe themselves as 'working')...
bondsmen, as a general rule, do not post bonds for hookers, they are often too hard to track down..... but when i did, it was for other things, and i found out about the hooker stuff later.

they consider themselves as service providers...
for $2-300 an hour, they made an unwanted man feel as if he had value. they sold fantasy/escape.

this issue is waaaay more complicated, i have learned, than others will ever understand.

just a question: if David was still a goat herder, would he have ever had a chance with Bathsheba, who was already married to a prominent Israelite warrior?

Not sure I agree with the 10% number (sounds a tad bit low), but I agree with Gino that it's not all that easy for every man to walk into a bar and pick up a woman.

The libertarian streak than runs through me almost -almost!- wants to file the whole deal under the umbrella of a legal transaction between consenting adults. It should at least put a slight dent in the horror that is human trafficking.

Yeah, we work with teenagers mostly. Prevented from having educations, beaten regularly, major Stockholm syndrome... it's NOT pretty. Of course they get good at giving out a fantasy - I would too if the consequences of failure were that high.

Hearthie, I think most men, including most johns, are quite aware of the drugs and violence. The stories pervade movies, TV, and printed literature. They simply don't care--it's just a breathing love doll to them, and given that they're willing to absorb some of the worst stuff those love dolls are carrying, I dare suggest they don't care a whole lot about their own futures, either.
