A devoted wife

Those who know me know that I'm prone to bragging about how good my wife is; how she's bought me my truck, my power tools, my guns, and generally makes even the roughest spots in life quite a bit sweeter.

That said, I've got to say that Jan Grzebski has a wife that's worth bragging about. For the past 19 years, she's tenderly cared for her comatose husband, and now she's been rewarded for her love with her husband's awakening. Well done, Gertruda, and may you and Jan enjoy many happy days together.

Incredible indeed. Yes, Americans can learn a lot from this. I was told that in some states here in the U.S., one spouse can get a divorce w/o the other's knowledge or consent.

Do you think that our independent way of life contribute to the freedom to marry and divorce so easily?

Actually, that's the case in virtually all states, Mercy. Divorce without consent is simply called "no fault" divorce, and it can proceed without consent or even knowledge. (although in some states the other spouse can contest it, but that's rare--any good lawyer tells you that things get ugly real fast once you start saying "you won't leave!")

Thankfully I don't know this from personal experience, but too many of my friends do.

Oh, my, what a story, on so many levels!

To wake up and discover communism is gone? Can you IMAGINE?

And of course there are not words high enough in praise for his wife. Thank God no one with the force of law behind him decided that Jan's injury had transformed him from "human" to "plant matter" to be weeded out.

yeah, if you want to get an idea of what that would be like:

Basil Expedition: The cold war is over!
Austin Powers: Well! Finally those capitalistic pigs will pay for their crimes, eh? Eh comrades? Eh?
Basil Expedition: Austin....we won.
Austin Powers: Oh, groovy, smashing! Yea capitalism!

Jane, it was surreal enough for me to watch the news in late 1989 when the Berlin Wall fell, and realize that when I visited in August of 1989, that wall was still there and there were fresh white crosses near the Reichstag (now Bundestag) building.
